In 2009, Baron Baptiste and the Baptiste Power Yoga Institute (BPYI) brought a team to Nairobi in support of the Africa Yoga Project organization to deliver the first Journey into Power Yoga Level One Teacher Training in Kenya. At this training, Baron introduced more than 50 Kenyans to the empowerment and satisfaction available through teaching yoga. Inspired by the power of this training, more than 40 of the participants are paid employees of AYP programs, contributing their knowledge and experience by supporting and delivering more than 200 classes weekly throughout Nairobi.

BPYI in the Streets offers yoga classes in 80 locations throughout Nairobi’s largest informal settlements including Korogocho, Mathare, Dandora and Africa’s largest slum, Kibera. The free weekly classes are held in orphanages, community halls, public grounds and several primary schools, which have incorporated yoga as part of their curriculum.

These classes transform the lives of thousands of people including the homeless, the unemployed, and the disenfranchised, providing a safe and supportive environment for self-development. Classes are continually added to the schedule as AYP teachers work to expand the number of class locations and participants.
