Our Yoga for Unity Program started as a performance group called the Amani Circus, which was established by the AYP organization and the Sarakasi Trust, a performing arts training and development organization in Kenya. Amani means peace in Swahili; the fundamental commitment of Yoga for Unity is to foster non-violence and peace. Through movement arts and creative expression, the members of this “peace” circus exhibit tremendous capability to communicate powerful emotions, facilitate authentic healing, inspire new understanding, and build new commitments to non-violence, partnership, and community.

It is neither possible nor desirable to erase people’s experiences of past trauma and turbulence; however, transforming the relationship to those experiences into fuel for greater learning and contribution is both possible and powerfully effective.

The Amani Circus began as an urgent response to post-election violence in 2008, holding eight programs that reached over 20,000 people living in Internal Displacement Camps. With the aid of Sarakasi Trust, the AYP organization funded a nine-month training program for the Amani Circus performers. As a result of the program’s success, twelve of Amani Circus performers were invited to Italy for a three-week tour to share their experiences and perform.

Although the daily outbreaks of violence that occurred in 2008 tapered off in 2009, Amani Circus continued to be the official outreach program of Sarakasi Trust, bringing yoga, acrobatics, dance and a message of peace to 40 slum communities throughout Nairobi. Through their engaging performances, the members of Amani Circus share experiences, celebrate transformation, appreciate differences, encourage healing, promote peace, and reveal that reconciliation is the way of the future.

The project leaders and group members are ambassadors of peace, representing all ethnic groups of Kenya with a shared commitment to facilitate healing and foster non-violence.
